Why Measure Health Security?
Whether it's at the dinner table or around the board room or in the halls of Congress, health care is on America's mind. Catholic Healthcare West is very much a part of this ongoing dialogue and we think the voices of those who are navigating the health care system everyday should be heard. So to help keep your voice at the forefront of the national conversation, we pioneered the Health Security Index®, a public opinion survey that makes your feelings on health security clear.
We've learned a lot from this national survey. For example, we know that as a nation we are only somewhat secure in our health. But we also know that each of us is willing to do our part to ensure that everyone who needs health care is able to get it. That's good news, because it means that we're ready for change.
Some of the other findings from our 2008 survey include:
- The number one concern regarding health security is affordability.
- Those living without health insurance are more than three times as likely to have had to choose between paying for basic necessities and health care.
- More than eight out of then (83%) young Americans (ages 25-34) worry that Medicare will not be available to them when they retire.
- Seven out of ten (69%) believe the time has come for universal health care in America.
- Almost half (46%) of U.S. adults believe the health care system in America is getting worse.
We believe the nation holds healthcare as a value for all. We hope our Health Security Index will help the nation's leaders understand how Americans feel about their health and their ability to access the care they need.
