The news out of California isn't uplifting. Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing steep cuts to health care to resolve a $15.2 billion budget gap.
It's unfortunate that the healthcare reform proposal put forward last year didn't pass. We supported the proposal and worked closely with the Governor to build it. Had it passed we wouldn't be facing these extreme cuts. What's more, last year's reform proposal didn't require any money from the state fund. It relied on a shared responsibility model where providers, employers, and individuals all played an important role in ensuring health care services were available to all.
As for this current crisis, we'll continue to work closely with the Governor and our state leaders to preserve healthcare for all Californians, especially those who are most vulnerable: the poor. It is encouraging that the Governor has signaled his intent to keep the reform debate active in the state.
